The PDP-8/I was the third reimplemantation in the serie. As the suffix 'I' implies, the CPU is built with low integrated circuits. So it belongs to the third computer generation. That makes it possible to put the whole CPU with a maximum of 32K main memory, the EAE and interface for a high speed paper tape reader and the DECtape with its controller in one 19" cabinet.
