It supports two IDE ports: - one VL-bus Enhanced-IDE port and - one ISA-bus IDE port. It also supports two serial ports, one parallel port and one game port. It uses the faster VL-Bus for massive data transfer with IDE hard disks attached to the VL-bus Enhanced-IDE port. IDE VL-Bus Interface -------------------- The ASIC U1 (PDC20630, VL-bus Enhanced controller) acts as the inter- face between IDE drives and the VL-bus. The IDE drive(s) attached to the VL-bus IDE port (J1) runs at a reliable factory default speed when the PC is turned on. After the PC is brought up, the device driver will individually program the IDE drive(s) to run at their optimal speed(s). Super I/O --------- The U2 and U3 chips provide the functions of an IDE disk controller, a floppy disk controller, two high speed 16C550 compatible UARTs with Send/Receive 16-byte FIFOs, one parallel port and one game port. The slower ISA/IDE disk controller is used to handle devices such as CD-ROMs as well as hard disk drives. The floppy controller supports two floppy drives with a density of up to 1.44 MB. Because these functions are usually slow, they use the conventional ISA protocol to communicate with the motherboard. Adjust the jumpers to select various serial, parallel and game port configurations. It contains a README.TXT file, and intelligent installation utility LCS6954.EXE and the device drivers for DOS, Windows, NT, Netware and OS/2. The device drivers are as follows: - LCS6954.SYS is the driver for DOS - LCS6954.386 is the driver for MS Windows 3.1 - LCSNT.SYS is the driver for Windows NT - N6954310.DSK is the driver for Netware 386 3.10 - N6954311.DSK is the driver for Netware 386 3.11 and 3.12 - N6954401.DSK is the driver for Netware 386 4.0 and 4.01 - LCS6954.ADD is the driver for OS/2 These device drivers enhance the disk performance by the combination of the 32-bit VL-Bus I/O, multiple-word DMA transfer mode and read/ write multipple commands. Two operation modes, Turbo(T) and Fast(F) are supported by these device drivers. In Turbo(T) mode (default operation mode), the systems will use the 32-bit VL-Bus I/O and the read/write multiple commands. The system will use the DMA transfer mode when the feature comes with attached drive(s). The Fast (F) operation uses the 32-bit VL-bus I/O; however, it does not use the read/write multiple commands and the DMA transfer mode. Note that not all IDE drives support the read/write multiple commands and the Multiple-word DMA transfer mode. Usually, you may set your LCS-6954/H card to run under the Turbo mode. If your system is installed with DOS together with the DOS driver LCS6954.SYS, the driver will automatically check if the attached IDE drive(s) supports the read/write multiple commands and the DMA transfer mode. In case your drive(s) does not support, the LCS-6954/H disk controller will automatically be forced to run under the Fast(F) mode. The device drivers for DOS, Windows, NT, Netware and OS/2 all have an internal table that contains the optimal transfer parameters for the most common IDE drives. When the systems starts to operate, appropriate transfer parameters in the table are used to program the LCS-6954/H controller automatically. This feature enables your IDE drives to deliver the best performance to your system. README.TXT ---------- This file contains the manual installation process of the device drivers for DOS, Windows, NT, Netware, and OS/2; you can either browse the file or print it for future reference. Installation Utility: LCS6954.EXE --------------------------------- Functions: - Analyzes your hard drive As described, the device drivers for DOS, Windows, NT, Netware and OS/2 all have an internal table which contains the optimal transfer parameters for the most common IDE drives. When executing the LCS6954.EXE, this utility will identify the hard drives attached to to the VL-bus IDE controller port. If be drive(s) is found in the table, it will select the optimal transfer parameters. If not, the utility will perform a real speed test to determine the optimal transfer parameters and automatically reconfigure the device drivers for DOS, Windows, NT, Netware and OS/2. Note that in most cases, the speed test function in the Installation Utility will obtain a set of reliable transfer parameters for your IDE drive(s). However, there are exceptions that your drive will not function properly. In such cases, setting your IDE drive to run at one grade lower speed will give you a reliable operation. For example: the Installation Utility recommends speed 6 for your drive, but your system can not access the disk reliably at speed 6. Setting manually your IDE drive to run at speed 5 will ensure a satisfactory result. - Install the device drivers for DOS and Windows LCS6954.EXE provides a friendly interface and procedure to install the device drivers for DOS, Windows, NT, Netware and OS/2. Install the drivers for DOS and Windows using LCS6954.EXE --------------------------------------------------------- You can use LCS6954.EXE to install the drivers for DOS and Windows easily. Execute the utility and refer to related Help Screen for more information. It's strongly recommended that the installation utility be used to install the DOS and Windows device drivers. After the device drivers are installed, you will see the prompt message on the screen: HDD 0 setting: Turbo mode, DMA Speed 7 by Device Driver automatically HDD 1 setting: Fast mode, Speed 5 by Device Driver automatically Where the underlined parameters will vary with the hard drive(s) attached. Install the device drivers manually ----------------------------------- Copy the device drivers to the proper path of your hard drive and edit the specific configuration files manually. Detailed procedures are found in the README.TXT file of the provided device driver diskette. As some IDE drives may not repond to the IDENTIFY DRIVE command from the device driver correctly, you may need to install the device driver manually and add appropriate parameters to ensure reliable operation of such IDE drive(s). Please browse the README.TXT file for more information. Some important information you should notice when executing the installation utility: 1. This installation utility can only be executed from floppy drives and needs at least 300KB free space in the floppy diskette. 2. Since this utility will reconfigure the device drivers in the diskette. the diskette should not be write-protected during operation. It is strongly recommended to make a backup diskette and execute the installation utility using the backup one. 3. During installation, the device drivers are optimized individually for motherboard and hard drives. Different systems will in different parameters be set in the drivers. Do not use the device drivers optimized for other system because they may not work reliably. 4. When you use the Installation Utility LCS6954.EXE to install the driver, make a record of the recommended drive speed. You may need the speed setting information for future reference.
